About
Nativelands
“No other population group in Canada’s history has endured such a deliberate, comprehensive, and prolonged assault on their human rights as that of Aboriginal people.”
-- Aboriginal Healing Foundation
Together with trusted partners, Nativelands developed a solution for Indigenous communities to prepare and submit claims into the specific claims process, launch an aggressive negotiation with the Minister and finance costs associated with the Specific Claims Tribunal with their own fully funded war chest: the legal expense insurance program.
Canada's Specific Claims issue is a complex matter that even the most esteemed law firms struggle to navigate, entangled in bureaucratic red tape, federal and municipal regulations, and the enduring complexities of the Indian Act of 1876. This is an area where those without direct experience with First Nations communities often find their understanding lacking.
Created and lead by the late Bill Montour, Nativelands Specific Claims Group has been working with, and for, Canada’s First Nations communities for over 45 years. Thirty years ago, Bill was introduced to Legal Expense Insurance (LEI) and since then Nativelands and its partners have invested millions of dollars and thousands of development hours in creating proprietary protocols and processes to assist Indigenous communities with their Specific Claims.
This includes developing research tools, defining protocols and procedures, and meeting with hundreds of insurance experts, lawyers, government agencies, and even Corporate Canada to create an organization capable of navigating the complex and often obstructive colonial systems traditionally encountered in the insurance and financial sectors.
